چکیده

It has been a well known fact for over 60 years that the genome undergoes rearrangements, or what seem to be a general scrambling of the order of the genome. In the salivary glands of Drosophila, a phenomenon of chromosomes doubling in thickness during mitosis has been noticed. This appears to be two homologs (identical copies of a chromosome segment created during cell division) that have glued together somehow. The chromosomes have an observable pattern of bands perpendicular to their length, which were studies since the 1920’s. This pattern is characteristic of a species. However, at times one can find two individuals of the species who show different patterns of these bands; usually the differences appear to be segment reversals along the pattern of bands.

Algorithms for Molecular Biology Fall Semester , 1998 Lecture 7 : January 17 , 1999

The size of GenBank is growing rapidly. Currently there are approximately 200 millions bases of human DNA sequences available in it, and it’s size is expected to triple over the next year. When the human genome project will be completed, it’s size will exceed 3 billion base pairs. Roughly 90% of the human genome is non-coding, namely is not a template for a protein. Due to the size of the datab...

Algorithms for Molecular Biology Fall Semester , 1998 Lecture 12 : February 21 , 1999

In this document we will briefly discuss several topics: 1. Hybridization 2. cDNA clustering 3. Analyzing gene expression data These topics will be addressed very briefly. The interested reader is referred to the bibliography for more details on these subjects. As we have already seen, under normal conditions, the DNA molecule is composed of two strands. These two strands are connected by hydro...

Multimedia in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education Evaluation of Molecular Visualization Software for Teaching Protein Structure DIFFERING OUTCOMES FROM LECTURE AND LAB

In this study we measured the learning outcomes resulting from using molecular visualization software in lecture and in the teaching laboratory of a large introductory-level undergraduate biology majors’ course. The study was initially carried out in the Fall semester of 1999; the results of this study were used to devise an expanded laboratory component that was evaluated in a second study car...
